History of North Hollywood, CA

North Hollywood started as an orchard farming town in 1873. It was known as Lankershim and was managed by Isaac B. Lankershim, the leader of an agricultural group from northern California.

The name of the town was contested with some residents calling it Toluca instead. The origin of this name was said to be from Native Americans meaning fertile valley. A mining baron named Charles Forman spearheaded the campaign to name the town Toluca in 1892 but the township’s name remained Lankershim.

In 1927, the town will undergo one final name change. Once the orchards were replaced by housing developments, the town wanted to capitalize on the ongoing real estate boom and Hollywood allure so the neighborhood was renamed North Hollywood.
