History of Tarzana, CA

Originally, Tarzana was a part of the land used for cattle herds and citrus trees named Rancho El Encino. It was a predominantly rural area. When land speculators found their way to the San Fernando Valley, the area was bought by Harrison Gray Otis, a Los Angeles Times Publisher.

It may come as a pleasant surprise to some to find that Tarzana got its name from the iconic children’s storybook character. In 1917, former ranch owner and beloved storybook writer Edgar Rice Burroughs bought land in the area and named it after one of his most prolific characters, Tarzan.

After Burroughs sold parts of his property for residential development, the surrounding landowners followed suit. The town’s official name as we know it now came about 10 years after when residents wanted to capitalize on Burroughs’ famous literary character and turn it into a real estate marketing opportunity.

Years after World War II, Tarzana experienced a steady pace of growth with more residential properties and commercial establishments. Even with the expansion of the neighborhood, it has kept its more relaxed and low-key atmosphere.
